CARL’s Golden Oldies

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Local dog rescue launches new program to aid senior dogs in Ventura County

Ventura, CA – July 8, 2016 – Local non-profit, all-breed dog rescue Canine Adoption and Rescue League (CARL) today announced its new “CARL’s Golden Oldies” program. CARL’s Golden Oldies is funded in part by a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization. The program focuses specifically on the unique needs of dogs aged 10 years or older.

CARL’s Golden Oldies is a partnership between CARL and The Grey Muzzle Organization, in close cooperation with Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS) and Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center (SPARC). The program was designed to save the lives of senior dogs who might otherwise be overlooked by potential adopters in the overcrowded county shelter.

As a no-kill county animal shelter, VCAS relies on the support of rescue groups like CARL to keep from overflowing. Rescue groups free up space in the shelter, ensuring VCAS can fulfill its mandate to take in stray and owner surrendered animals while still remaining no-kill.

Senior dogs are historically considered difficult to adopt, with most families gravitating towards younger animals. In addition, they often come with medical problems that must be treated before most families will adopt them.

Under the new program, VCAS and SPARC identify these less-adoptable senior dogs. CARL will then either place the dogs in pre-approved foster homes, or board them at CARL’s Pet Care Center, a public boarding facility that doubles as the temporary home for a number of CARL’s approximately 60 rescue dogs.

The dogs are spotlighted on CARL’s website and social media, and volunteers work to find them homes through adoption events and outreach.

“Senior dogs have a lot of love to give,” said CARL Executive Director Sharon Clark. “They’re calm and sweet, they’re usually house trained, and they just want to get into a home again. Like Grey Muzzle says, no dog should die alone and afraid.”

The funds provided by The Grey Muzzle Organization are used solely for the medical and dental care of the CARL’s Golden Oldies dogs. Food and board is $10 per day per dog, and is paid by tax-deductible donations from the community. Fundraising events such as the upcoming 19th Annual Pooch Parade will also support the program in part.
