CARL Rescues 11 Dogs from Yulin Dog Meat Festival

By Daniel Elliot

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CARL Rescues 11 Dogs from Yulin Dog Meat Festival

Ventura, CA – November 15, 2016 – Canine Adoption and Rescue League has committed to caring and finding homes for 11 dogs bred for human consumption as part of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Six of the dogs arrived safely at the rescue earlier this week, with the remainder coming by December 1.

CARL is part of a large-scale effort to rescue approximately 100 dogs from China. The effort is spearheaded by Santa Barbara-based animal welfare advocate Deborah Hall (Groundboots.org), who has organized volunteers and funds to fly to China, retrieve the dogs from a local rescue partner, and fly them back to the United States.

The costs to transport the dogs to the US were paid entirely by the Soi Dog Foundation, a Thailand-based dog welfare organization which may be found online at SoiDog.org.

Two CARL volunteers flew to China, and several more traveled to LAX last night to receive the dogs and transport them back to the CARL facility in Santa Paula. There, the dogs will be given medical and behavioral care before they are placed in the rescue’s adoption program.

“I can’t begin to imagine what these dogs have been through,” stated CARL Executive Director Sharon Clark. “What matters is they’re safe now. We’ll give them all the love they can stand, and we’ll find them families that will cherish them like they deserve.”

Although CARL focuses on rescuing dogs in Ventura County, the Yulin dogs are not the first animals to travel a long way to the organization. In 2005, CARL served as temporary home to 42 dogs left homeless by Hurricane Katrina.
