About Us
Canine Adoption and Rescue League (CARL) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit all breed, no-kill dog rescue and adoption organization. Since 1996, CARL has rescued and placed thousands of unwanted, sick, abandoned, and homeless dogs. Dogs in our adoption program are placed in pre-screened, loving and secure homes. We make a lifetime commitment to all of our dogs.
CARL is located in Ventura County, California and primarily serves Ventura County dogs. Because of our lifetime commitment to our dogs we have a preference to place dogs locally so we are available to them if needed. We rely on donations and do not receive government, state, or city funding. We operate almost entirely by volunteers
Mission Statement
Canine Adoption and Rescue League’s mission is to advocate for animal welfare, seeking to end the needless deaths of companion animals through our adoption, education, and outreach programs.

Join Our Board of Directors!
Are you passionate about helping dogs and want to make a real difference behind the scenes? The Canine Adoption and Rescue League (CARL) is always looking for dedicated community leaders to join our Governance Board as Members-at-Large!
Our board can have up to 15 directors, and we keep applications open year-round so we can connect with great people the moment they are ready to jump in. New members are officially welcomed onto the board through a majority vote of our current team.
Who we’re looking for right now: While we welcome all kinds of backgrounds, we are especially looking for folks who have experience with:
- Fundraising, Grants, & Events: Helping us secure critical resources and plan awesome campaigns.
- Marketing, PR, & Social Media: Getting the word out about our mission and our adoptable dogs.
- Financial, HR, Operations, & Strategy: Helping us manage our accounting, team, and big-picture planning.
- Legal, Compliance, & CA Nonprofit Governance: Keeping our operations smooth, safe, and up to California standards.
- Veterinary & Animal Care Expertise: Bringing essential medical or rescue insights to the table (a huge bonus!).
If you have a laptop, phone, or tablet, some free time to commit, and a big heart for rescue dogs, we would love to meet you.
