A sibling affair: twins earn top scouting awards together
Teen’’ projects will renovate adoption center, replace kennel roofs at CARL.

Moorpark twins Sara Jane and John Dulak have a common goal: to earn the highest award available in their respective scouting groups.

The 15-year-old sophomores at Oaks Christian High School are working on two separate projects to help the Canine Adoption and Rescue League, a Ventura-based dog rescue group.

The siblings, who have been involved in scouts since they were in the first grade, hadn’t planned on doing their projects at the same time, let alone for the same organization. It just worked out that way, according to their mother, Katie Dulak.

“It is kind of funny that after both of them being in scouting since first grade that they are now working on their projects,” Dulak said. “It wasn’t really a planned thing . . . but they both decided over the summer that they were going to work on their proposals.”

Sara Jane recently began her Girl Scout Gold Award project. She is working Sundays to renovate the adoption center in Ventura, where the organization offers dogs for adoption from noon to 3 p.m. most Saturdays.

“I was thinking about a bunch of things that I enjoy and a bunch of things that I like, and one of the things I want to be when I grow up is a veterinarian,” Sara Jane said. “I thought it would be best if I worked with dogs. I also love interior designing. I love decorating, so I think this is a mixture of both things that I am really passionate about.”
